Life Well Lived

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Genesis 2:7

What are we to do with this life that was given to us by our creator? In the time of Moses, the law was given to the children of Israel from God which they were to live by to not sin. Those that kept the law were blessed by God.

In that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statues, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.

Deuteronomy 30:16

So the basis or road map of how to live our lives in rooted in the desire to live according to God and his word. In the book of Proverbs it reminds us of this.

My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you.

Proverbs 3:1-2
Trust in the Lord will all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6

A life well lived consists of reading and studying the entire Word of God. Jesus the Christ came to earth to fulfill prophecy by being the sin sacrifice once and for all. Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.

Jesus sat down on a mountain in front of His disciples after healing the multitudes to teach them the following:

Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:17

Jesus fulfilled prophecy by his death and resurrection. Followers of Jesus Christ no longer have to make a sin sacrifice according to the Law.

We are saved by grace through our faith in Jesus Christ. This is what Paul was referencing in Chapter 3 of Galatians. In summary, we believe Paul was making the following points. The Galatians knew the Law. It was their tutor. It taught them how to live and how to handle situations justly which we believe Paul thought was good. The issue that Paul was trying to get across to the Galatians is that when they are saved by grace through faith, their sins are forgiven and there is no need for an animal sacrifice.

Jesus reminds us of the importance of keeping our hearts on the commandments given to us. When asked by someone on the road what should be done by him to inherit eternal life, Jesus said the following:

You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery; Do not murder; Do not steal; Do not bear false witness; Do not defraud; Honor your Father and your Mother;

Mark 10:19

Jesus continued after reminding this man of the original commandments to tell him to give up all his treasures and follow Him. This shows that the people of Jesus day and Paul’s day had a common knowledge of the Law and lived by it.

Today there is a false teaching that the Old Testament is of no value. This is not true. Both Old Testament and the New Testament should be read and studied together. In order to understand the New Testament and what was being said, the Old Testament has to be read and studied.

10 Commandments found in Exodus 20 1-17

  • 2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image.
  • 3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
